Frequently Asked Questions

What are the qualifications of your teachers?

All teachers are experienced teachers and/or performers, the majority of whom have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in music in pedagogy, performance, or education. While our instructors operate independently and use their own teaching methods, all have successfully passed our rigorous screening process which includes an extensive background check, a performance audition, a formal interview, and numerous reference checks. All teachers love music, and are committed to helping their students discover a passion for music.

What if my child starts out in lessons but doesn't like it?

It is not uncommon for a student to start out with one instrument, and then switch to another instrument that they enjoy more. We offer a wide variety of instruments so there is always something for everybody. We highly recommend students stick with lessons for at least three months because some time is needed for their skills and knowledge to start blossoming.

Do you offer lessons to adults?

Definitely! We have many adult students that study with us each week. We are happy to teach adults at any level from beginning to advanced. Our adult students simply aren't as eager as our younger students to be on camera!

Can I sit in on my child's lessons?

Absolutely, we have an open door policy. It is your choice to sit in on your child's lessons, but not required.  Some students find it distracting, but others work better with Mom or Dad in the room. The teacher can give you some advice on this after they get to know your child.

Do we need a real piano at home?

Although a real (acoustic) piano is usually best, it is not necessary to begin lessons. Many students begin with keyboards. The most important thing to know when renting or purchasing a keyboard is that it must have full-sized keys and be touch-sensitive (sound changes depending on how you play the keys).  It is best to get a keyboard with at least 60 keys to ensure the student does not outgrow it too quickly. Whenever possible, a weighted action is preferred to non-weighted or semi-weighted action so that students can practice on an instrument that most closely resembles an acoustic piano.

How much do lessons cost?

  • $25 per 30 minute lesson held once a week (recommended for young beginners)
  • $37.50 per 45 minute lesson held once a week (recommended for teens and adults)
  • $50 per 60 minute lesson held once a week (recommended for the serious student)

Tuition is billed monthly for 4 lessons and is collected at the first lesson of each month.

At what age can my child begin lessons?

This depends on the teaching method as well as the child's ability, attention span, maturity, and interest level. Our instrument/student age ranges are:
  • Piano Lessons: 4 to adult
  • Voice Lessons: 9 to adult
  • All other instruments: 7 to adult

What types of books do teachers use for lessons?

Most of the time, we utilize Faber's Piano Adventures series. Depending on the age and ability of the student, we will also use various technique and theory books authored by Keith Snell and others authors. However, if the student has taken lessons previously, the teacher may evaluate their old textbooks and may choose to continue with the ones you already own.

Do you provide opportunities for students to participate in Recitals, Competitions, Exams and Adjudicative Events?

The Egner School of Music offers several of its own events that fall under this category, and we also are happy to prepare students for events hosted by other organizations as well. The school attends the Young Performer Awards Program (YPA) on a bi-annual basis where the student's performance is evaluated. YPA also includes an optional Theory Exam. YPA is available for beginner to advanced students of all ages. Our teachers typically hold two recitals a year: fall and spring. Many of our teachers also participate in ABRSM Royal School Exams, National Federation of Music Clubs Events, and State Music Teacher organization events.
